To Include: The Collection of Mr. Abraham Abraham, The Jade Shop, Toronto The Imperial Jade Shop, later known as The Jade Shop, opened in the distinguished King Edward Hotel, downtown Toronto in 1971. Mr. Abraham Abraham, the principle of the shop, used his keen eye and knowledge to acquire and import only the finest quality Chinese jades and antiques. Mr. Abraham was born in India in 1929 to a reasonably well to do family. In 1947 he immigrated to England where he met his lovely wife Renee, then in March of 1957 they moved to Toronto, Canada. Together they had two girls, Judy and Jackie. Abraham’s primary earning was through real estate and insurance although during this time he began to study far east antiques through mentorship, books and the attendance of auctions. His interest grew so immensely that he chose to begin buying and selling antiques and ultimately to open The Jade Shop. Abraham and his mentor traveled to Hong Kong and the Far East on several buying trips through the early 1970s. He worked with Chinese trading companies to gather a wide array of Chinese porcelain, jade and metal wares to be imported into Canada. His buying trips were complemented by excursions to New York to attend and purchase at auction. In 1976 The Jade Shop closed for renovations and all inventory was placed in private storage. At the end of the decade the porcelain collection was sold through Sothebys New York. A.H. Wilkens October 23rd Asian Arts auction will include over 200 lots of jades and Chinese antiques from Mr. Abraham’s collection. This is the first time since storage that the collection will be shown and offered to the market. We are honoured to share this collection of significant provenance to the International market place.
